Yesterday was a busy eventful day. My son graduated from Marysville Community and Technical College with an Associate in Arts Degree.
This was a child who wanted to go to college so much and was told that his learning disability might not let him succeed. Well this mom was with him every step of the way. I studied with him, read to him and fought for his accommodations. He started out full time and found his disability would not allow him to succeed at that pace so after nearly quoting after the first semester and sitting out a semester he went back part time. This last semester was especially hard for him and I was very little help with College Algebra. To pass his one class He needed to graduate He spent 2 days a week working 4 hours a day with a tutor and staying after class for additional assistance. His instructor was a great help as well. 6 years is what he invested to reach his dream but he achieved it. I am so proud of him!!!
I hope I can put the same determination into getting healthy and being around to support him as long as I can.

I remember as a child I had to go through so much extra help in school. I was slow in math. Lol.... And I had trouble with reading/language when I was real young. I was also going to after school tutors, doing hooked on phonix and getting taken out of class with a small group of students to do more private lessons in math and such. I used to be so embarrassed that I couldn't learn with everyone else. I felt stupid. I dont remember if it was a learning disability or I was just slow at the time. I would have to ask my parents. But I do remember them putting a lot of effort into me and getting me caught up with the other kids in my grade. By 8th grade I was finally caught up. Your son is lucky to have a mom like you to push him to success. Not everyone is lucky to have parents like we have to push us to become the best we can be.

Awesome story. I think one of the biggest mistake teachers make is to tell a student something might stop them. I tell my guitar students, once they have discovered something is difficult that, yes, it's difficult, but it's not impossible, and it will get easier. So many teachers will tell students up front that something is going to be very heard for them. That's so stupid. I'm often astonished when something I found difficult turns out to be very easy for one of my students. I've learned to shut up and let the student discover what's difficult for them! They we work through it slowly until it settles in. It's all about the work when it get's tough.
