In order to lose weight, you must burn more calories than you consume. This doesn't mean you have to give up any foods, but you do have to stay with your RDI (recommended daily intake). If your RDI is 1500 calories a day, then you must plan your meals to equal that number of calories and weigh every bite that goes into your mouth so that you know how many calories you have consumed (I weigh in grams, it's more accurate).
