Flavor, flavor, flavor!!

Anytime a recipe calls for water I use fat-free, low-sodium broth. It has too few calories to increase the points but adds a lot of flavor! When I saute or cook meat I often use fat-free Italian dressing instead of oil (depending on the recipe) or I use flavored cooking sprays. When I make desserts calling for milk I use powdered milk (partially because I don't like milk, and powdered keeps), then in place of the water I often use calorie-free liquid (coffee with chocolate pudding for mocha flavor, raspberry drink for a berry flavor, etc). I love to roast my vegetables (rub with fat-free Italian dressing and spray with a little non-stick spray), they really taste wonderful and have no more calories. Plus you can toss leftovers into soups for extra flavor. Kick up the flavor anytime you can for nothing!

Check out http://www.americastestkitchen.com/ for other cooking ideas. They don't cook healthy (neccessarily), but they can give you lots of tips for increasing flavor. I learned to use a cooling rack to roast and oven "fry" (use any recipe, spray rack and food with a little cooking spray and cook--the air will circulate and you won't get the soggy underside that you often get otherwise--but it may also take less time--so watch it!).

How long does it take to get a recipe approved?

I just want to throw an idea out to anyone who's catches this!

While I was in Denmark, years and years ago (I'm not saying how many) my first host mother did something pretty cool each month. We'd meet a lot of ladies and we'd cycle around town. One lady would plan the route each month, and afterwards everyone would go back to her house for tea, cookies and "other" (tiny glasses of liquors were usually also served). Of course the ladies loved finding new interesting routes to take everyone on, showing off their gardens (which were wonderful), sharing new cookie, cake and sandwich recipes, and new liquors they found.

It seems to me that this would be a great thing to do with a group of friends! Only, healthy it up a bit! Everyone can bring their own meal. We brought picnics that we ate halfway through the ride, and we still had tea later--but remember Danes (and most Europeans) walk much more than we do!

This fall (it is TOO HOT in Texas right now), I hope to find some folks to go hiking or biking with each week or month (or whatever). We can take turns finding new places to explore. We can bring our own healthy meals (sandwiches loaded with veggies are low in points, add a bunch of veggies and dip and maybe a 100-calorie pack of chips and you have a big meal for 6-8 points!), maybe we can take turns bringing a low-point dessert (to share new ideas and recipes). Our town is supposed to have a nature preserve area with hiking tails, but I haven't checked it out yet!

I never have time to make entries during the week, but I'm doing better today so maybe it helps!

I am finally getting too small for some of my clothes!! I have absolutely bags of them that I never liked to begin with, but some I had to wear because nothing else fit! My family has a wonderful tradition that once a year all the women get together for a Hen Party--no men, no kids, no cooking--and it really helps to blow off steam--but we also all bring the clothes that we can no longer wear and trade. Since I've been the largest member for a while, pretty much anything that fit me went home with me--and often these were not items I would have chosen myself! That doesn't mean they aren't nice, just not my style! I finally pitched all of that about a month ago because things that had been too small now fit (plus things my mom bought me--I still dislike shopping right now--plus sizes are the WORST about being inconsistent--there is nothing like finding out you can't even fit your fat butt into the 5X in one shirt, while finding the 3X in another is like a TENT!).

Anyway, I do wish I could find a way to find some other dieting ladies to set up a sort of trade, that way everyone gets something new, and no one has to spend any money (because hopefully even your new size is temporary!).

I'm much to shy to broach the subject in a WW meeting, especially since we never seem to attend the same meeting more than a couple of time in a row! I go with my sister, and her schedule is crazy!

Weekends are the worst for me!!

I think I've figured out part of the problem:

1. At work I'm busy, I don't have the same amount of time to wander to the kitchen.
2. At work I always keep a glass of water on my desk. I keep a diet coke too (they are free at my office and so hard to resist!), but at least I always have something to fill me up a bit before I go hunting for a snack.
3. I also chew gum at work, and while it annoys one of my co-workers (it is bubble gum, which is, after all, meant to be blown--and perforce popped!), I don't mind that. However, it drives my husband ape, so I don't chew at home.

Anyway, I have been munching all damn day, and I haven't even gotten in my 35 grams of fiber!

I'm having a glass of water (finally, at 11:00 at night), and if I'm hungry again I'm just going to have a bowl of Fiber One.

I don't have much time, but I thought this was funny.

I watched a PBS special over the weekend on the Fiber 35 diet, and it seemed to dovetail closely with what WW thinks (based on how they calculate points, and encourage CORE eating). So, I thought, according to this reasoning, if I keep my points (ie. calories) the same, but increase my fiber intake, I ought to lose a few more pounds than by points alone.

So, I began eating a serving (I thought) of Fiber One for breakfast, traking my points and my fiber for each day, trying to get at least 35.

I guess I eat a pretty high fiber diet to begin with, because it hasn't been too bothersome for my tummy....but it has been a bit.

Today I discovered that a serving is only 1/2 cup, not the ONE cup I've been eating...so I was pretty much getting my entire 35 grams of fiber at breakfast....no wonder my tummy rumbled!

I have only been doing it since Monday, and was bad at the Zoo with my son yesterday...so I cannot yet report any added benefit!
