Haven't weighed yet but I have Questions? Can you eat too much Fat? It is a High fat/low carb but is there too much? Calorie wise, I went over, way over yesterday. Mowed the yard, push mower, and did some pruning and weeding. Was using fat bombs and MCT for energy. Broke a 20ish hour fast with a leftover 5 oz steak. Then did my yard work. I was done for by the time I finished. Fitbit Blaze had me at continuous activity for 123 minutes. Supposedly I burned off almost or more than what I ate yesterday. If I am up when I weigh do I continue with higher fat or come down a little and increase Protein? Before with Atkins, I did really good with higher amounts of protein. I try and keep my carbs to under 20. There are days I succeed then..... Next question, every time I run my fingers through my hair I come away with loose hair. Being hypo I have a problem with thin hair to begin with. It had gotten better but now it is beginning to worry me. My scalp itches a lot at times. Does one have anything to do with the Other? I have heard that you lose hair at first then it gets stronger. My nails are deplorable as well. They peel easily. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I know I am opening myself to people who might not be so nice. I hope everyone has an excellent day.

Look up a Swedish Doctor and his site " Diet Doctor ". Too much protein can be converted to fat as well. He will tell if you are hungry eat more fat! Once in ketosis then body fat is used for energy, eating fat is self limiting unlike proteins, carbs etc. He will tell you eat when hungry and stop when you are not! Re nails and hair. Fine soft hair, soft easily broken nails but when in ketosis I found my hair was less greasy and nails are definitely stronger! Hope I have been nice! Uncalled for impolite or unkind remarks should be followed up by the site monitors. There are such monitor son the site?

Hair falling out can be a sign of thyroid problems. I would talk to your doctor about that. Gelatin is helpful to strengthen nails. I'm doing LCHF too, and ate too much fat yesterday. How do I know? I got acid reflux for the first time. And I was restless at night. So, the answer there is listen to your body. I find that I lose well with a surprising amount of fat, but if you do overdo it, your body will tell you. How did the weigh in go?

I took a peek at your food diary and my opinion :-) maybe your protein is a little low? I do LCHF and try to keep it around 70-75% fat, 20-25% protein, 5% carbs or less. Too little protein can be hard on your muscle mass. This has worked well for me for over a year...

Erika, I stayed even. But I think my body comp is chabging. I am on thyroid mess and Dr's just what to go by numbers not what your body is actually telling them. I have had 2 restless nights in a row. First night tried to go to sleep, couldn't, and I just got up. Didn't go to bed until 2. Last night kept tossing and turning. Both those days higher fat. I am thinking of upping my protein a little and still keep my carbs as low as possible. I just finished 4 eggs and sausage and I am stuffed.

Low protein can cause hair loss, too. I know, because I've not been watching my protein for a while, and my hair has thinned noticeably. Biotin will help, as well as making sure you're getting at least .5 grams of protein per lb of body weight. For you, right now, that means at least 80 grams of protein per day.

Normadale, there are many reasons why your hair could be falling out, if you are taking medications, have been on antibiotics or had surgery recently it will cause hair loss. If you are just starting off on LCHF it will take a few weeks for your hair, skin and nails to start showing an improvement. I have noticed that some folks use the MCT oils for fat instead of pure coconut oil. MCT oil has had the lauric acid stripped out of it and the lauric acid in coconut oil is the most beneficial for your skin, hair and nails. I use a 50/50 blend in my coffees. I use a tablespoon of solid at room temperature coconut oil and a tablespoon of liquid MCT oil. I have lots of new hair growth and my nails are long and strong....sadly enough they won't hold onto nail polish though....too oily, nail polish pops off whole after two days...looking at the bright side, I don't have to bother with nail polish remover to get it off :)

No new meds or surgeries. Not new to lchf. Did not know that about the Lauric Acid. I use Brain Octane Fuel from Bulletproof. OK up my protein and do half coconut oil and MCT.

Speaking of nails, I was taught as a child that the only living part of my nail was the half moon part at the base of the nail bed. This can't be right! When I was eating junk upon junk with more junk dipped in junk, my nails were very soft and bended over the tips of my fingers easily. I started a juice fast and within a week, my nails were firm and strong. Same nail, but stronger. It's the same with LCHF. I am thinking the sugars and grains function as anti-nutrients. But still! The white part of the nail is not inert. There are things happening there.
