My family all pitched in to buy me a bicycle for my birthday. They've given me money so that I could pick something out, but I don't know much about bikes. I live in the middle of a wide flat valley with famous bike trails branching out in all directions, so I'll be riding mostly on flat paved roads and trails. Any hints or suggestions?

Thanks everyone! As I lose weight and move more, I'm getting healthier, and that is the best birthday gift - one I'm giving myself, everyday! Hears to a healthier year for us all! Thanks for doing this with me; it means a lot!

I don't post here much, but I am similar to your age and weight. I own a Giant brand comfort bike. It is 21 speed with a nice wide saddle and bigger tires which make it easy to ride on pavement or limestone trails. Go to a bike shop and they will fit you and recommend bikes for your fitness level, etc. A comfort bike allows you to sit up straight so you don't have a lot of pressure on your hands and wrists. And the seat is way more comfortable than a mountain bike. I love my bike - and riding the trails is really a good way to be active and out in the fresh air - good luck.

Pierre got me a trike (my balance not so hot due to MS). It has an electric motor so when I get to a hill and need help it gives me a boost. Lots of his here and dirt roads. I find my stationary bike is safer and easier to use and gives me something to ride when there is a lot of snow and ice. I would strongly suggest you try before you buy!

My second thought is buy the best possible bike you can get at a bike shop - lighter is better. You will find bicycling a joy then and will probably take to it easily - you will easily learn to use gears. I am excited for you,

Thank you for talking about bicycles, it encouraged me to dust off mine and ride it yesterday! Felt really good!
