Hey Erin, hope you're doing okay tonight?

it's a long story but in the end everything is ok 👍 Thank you both for asking. Tried letting Bailey do off leash in the front yard because we don't have a back yard and she did great for the first bit coming back with the ball. Well she saw a rabbit and took off chasing it. Needless to say I thought are was gone. Lesson learned I will buy her a longer leash for play time instead of trying off leash again any time soon.

I did that camping and “Action Jackson” took off after a critter over the top of a small friggin mountain that I had to chase after him while the kids were on the dirt road crying because they thought he was gone. That was a fun one.
I would suggest training an emergency recall word that the dog will associate with high value treats if you can to help in these situations. We use the word “touch” and raw or freeze dried meat for this. But my dog is very food motivated.

she is too but I sadly can't just give her anything .... everything has to no fat or low fat .... but I will try that emergency recall word with her.

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand what the issue is with lean meat treats is? Is there some sort of medical issue? My dog gets his "macros" from his actual meals, but treats for emergency recall are whatever he responds the most enthusiastically for.

A dog's natural reaction to chase critters....scary when it happens because it's so unexpected!! Erin do you have a body harness for Bailey? If you're going to give her a longer leash for playtime, a body harness will ensure that if she does take off...she wont choke herself out or snap her neck with just a regular collar!

Good to hear there was a happy ending, but definitely a pet parent’s worst nightmare 🥹

SM yes life long medical issue lean treats are ok but don't want to be rewarding bad behavior so I think I'll train her with an emergency word instead. I literally have to watch the fat in take on everything she gets or her pancreas will act up

Thank you Val it really was

Nadja she only wears a harness. I don't want to put q collar on her due to the fact a lot of small dogs have trachea problems that and because she's a puller. Still training that out of her tho.
