What is up with the Biggest Loser?

I've never watched the show in the past, mostly because I despise all reality TV, but I recently decided to check it out to see if I can get any tips. I do get that it is a game, but I don't understand why they think that the only way to provide drama is if they kick people off. In the two episodes I've now seen, the three things that I thought provided the most drama were Tracey collapsing, the intro weigh-in, and Shay's issues with Julio. Not to mention their challenge on the balance beams!

It seems to me that if the show is called "The Biggest Loser" that at the end of the 10 or 12 weeks, that whomever has lost the most - wins. Instead, in the first episode two people lost 13 lbs each (which would have me screaming for joy) and they were devastated because they dropped below the yellow line. What insanity is this??? 13 lbs in a week is freaking FANTASTIC!!! And on that same episode there were people who had lost less than they, but they didn't drop below the line. (Yes, I understand it's based on percentages)

I just about decided to stop DVR'ing it because of that stupidity, but I figure if I really do get some great tips then it's worth suffering though the producers insipid, myopic minds.

I am not a fan of this show ... but many here on fatsecret seem to enjoy the show. But ... truth be told ... I'm not a big fan of life drama anyway ... there is enough "real drama" to deal with!! LOL!!

To me, it just seems like they lose weight WAY TOO FAST, but I admitt, I do watch it sometimes. I'd like to see people that were on the first show and see if they kept it off.

A reunion show - good idea.

I don't watch much either; but enough to know they exercise about 4-6 hours a day, which explains the incredible weight loss each week. They (the show) must be extremely careful in the medical monitoring because they push the contestants TO THE EXTREME, especially given that they are usually 100# or more overweight. It's impressive - I'd love to lose 10#s a week - but I think what they do might be dangerous in the real world.

Not to mention seriously time consuming. I can find an hour or two a day to exercise - but 4-6 hours?

I'm a huge fan of this show and have been watching it since the 3rd or 4th season. I admit, the "drama" and catfights can get really annoying, but Bob & Jillian are extremely knowledgeable and give tons of great tips for real life. I know the weightloss is drastic, but I think the point is to show people that they CAN lose weight it if they're commited. How many times have we all heard (or said), "I've tried every diet known to man, but I just can't lose the weight." This show shows us that it really is all about calories in, calories out. Diet and exercise...no gimmicks! Also, I know that it's unrealistic for us to exercise 4-6 hours a day. But again, I think the point is that if THEY can workout 4-6 hours a day, then we can surely find time and energy to work out 1 hour every day.

I agree with you about that part bindi. They prove it CAN BE DONE, no matter what the individual challenges are (weight, health, metabolism, psychology) . That's what I like about the show; and it's the reason I occasionally check in to see what they're up to. I find it EXTREMELY encouraging and I, too, find the trainer tips helpful even if I can't stop work and devote my entire day, every day to diet and exercise. Sometimes I wish I could.

Thanks doit! I agree, it is encouraging. Irritating the way they have designed the show, but I enjoy the stories of the individuals and to see them succeed.
