jsfantome's Journal, 13 May 11

I haven't been recording my food on a daily basis for quite some time. That's because for me, and my system, I never got very far up the carb ladder before I realized I am incredibly sensitive, and most foods beyond veggies, a few fruits, and a little nuts... is just about my carb limit! I will occasionally throw in a higher fruit, or higher veggie... now that I am in maintenance, where I wouldn't have done that when I was trying to lose weight.

Then I got to my goal weight, and just leveled off. As if somehow, someway, my body magically understood this is it! This is the finish line, and it was done. Regardless of the fact that I wanted to lose 5 more lbs... it didn't want to.

I continued to eat the same things I always did (with zero indulgences) and nothing!

Well, I got to the point mentally, when I felt like 'hey, I have been at this for 10 months, or a year, or whatever, this is my lifestyle, and I am faithful',... so I would PLAN the occasional indulgence.

Well, last Sunday was Mother's Day, and I had a fabulous day, just hangin' at home w/ my 3 adult kids, their near spouses, etc.. and when the day was over, my husband took me out for an hour just to get out of the house together alone.

I had not planned in an indulgence for the day - but while driving by I had an impulse to want an 'ice cream sundae'. Yeah, that's right! Oh my Head! I had a Peanutbutter/Hotfudge Bash from Dairy Queen.

Don't even want to know what the carb counts were! :)

Funny thing, my weight dropped! Go figure. I have no explanations.

Perhaps Russell, and the Spike Diet is more accurate than anything I once thought about all of this way of eating!!!

I can't explain it... not sure what I am going to do now. Nothing else in my life, food, exercise, etc.. has changed. Still eating according to plan, and all the same things I ate the week before w/ NO loss, I ate this week, with a loss. The treat was the ONLY difference. ????

Oh, well - it sure was good! And I am glad I had it now! A pound is a pound is a pound!

Now, I don't recommend you go jump on the 'eat a treat' bandwagon... but even while in OWL... I think a once a month pre-planned indulgence of ONE thing, should be part of your game plan. Be prepared, as I did experience higher food thoughts and cravings the next day, but they passed easily, and I didn't get sucked into a destructive pattern... but they did happen.

There is just so much to our 'physche' - as it relates to food, and our actual weight losses...

Hope you all have a great weekend. Just wanted to share my bizarre story! Much Love.

I order the book for the Spike Diet and it should come today. I just want to check it out and get informed before I make any decisions. I've read it more than once that you should have a "treat" meal/day to change things up. Our bodies get used to the same foods and level of activity so you have to trick it to make it lose again. I'm stuck but I'm really leary about having a off plan day. Scared that I won't be able to get back on. But I have had days where low carb peanut butter cookies became my dinner and I was able to jump right back into it the next day. Maybe there is something to this. BTW, you're treat sounds really good.

Like you have pointed out before - you can never stop learning.

Hey D'sMom, I was thinking of ordering that book, as I have been more committed, long term to keeping up w/ my schedule at the gym...then any other time before in my life. I know russell's plan is centered around food and exercise, and how they react together in the body and w/ your metabolism. Would love to hear what you think about the book when you get it!!! Keep me posted, pls!

Very cool that you jolted your plateau! It's funny how just when we think we know what the science is behind weightloss, something comes along and challenges it (like lowering carbs/cycling carbs/ or cheat days were traditionally unexplained in the past 20 years). Always keep an open mind I always say! ;)

Very interesting! I guess you can handle legumes (peanut butter) and dairy!!!!! I really don't know anything about carb cycling, except that it's not a sport - LOL! Sounds like there might be something to it though...

Very interesting....I have often heard that but wasn't brave enough to try it. lol Glad that you broke through that plateau! Hugs and have a great weekend!

Nice job Paula. That once a month "PLANNED" indulgence does sound tempting. Glad you were able to do that with success. You also have a great weekend.:)

Stef - I spent waaaay too much time this past year in FEAR that it would all come right back on if I ate the wrong foods. Well, after the scare with 'skin cancer' that I went through - I decided my commitment, and faithfulness would hold me in check - so an indulgence on occasion would be 'doable'. The worst that would happen would be I would get to my 5 lb RED STOP LIGHT in my head... and my pre-planned indulgences would be a thing of the past! LOL! I was really surprised at the Mother's Day treat... didn't plan on that one... and certainly didn't expect a loss after it either! But I want the courage to live day to day, and not be afraid. So, I am challenging myself to choose wisely, but to have ONE treat - once a week on Sunday's - and see how it goes.

Laurie - not sure I really had anything to do with it... just was prepared to live w/ the consequences... but they turned out to be good ones :)))

I like the words "occasional indulgence" way better than "constant deprivation". You may be on to something that will certainly lend itself to making your WOE more enjoyable. The body does need those occasional kick starts, jumps, or whatever you want to call them.

Paula, good for you....I recently had some carb smart vanilla ice cream with some sf torani raspberry syrup, and it was awesome. The only down side is that I am so intolerant of ice cream, it gives me tummy issues within 15 minutes. So I have to be very careful. But I will say that I have been enjoying my fruit. The 1/2 an apple or pear, the 3 or 4 ounces of watermelon or canteloupe has really been wonderful. And I am loving having it along with the occasional berries, etc. Have a wonderful weekend!!! Hugs!

Thanks Stef, and BTW - have I told you lately just how AWESOME you truly are! You hang in there my friend... whatever your body needs to start moving again, I am sure you will discover... and in the meantime, you are just the sweetest person on a personal journey of self improvement! Much Love!!!
