Gnewfry's Journal, 08 Jun 14

boy am i hungry! i feel like i keep going to sleep hungry, waking up hungry and not being able to get full throughout the day. i know that if i stay hungry i will have a panic attack, and i'd like to avoid that. in the past, it has taken a little while to get used to eating less. the hunger will go away. i just don't remember how long. right now i'm in quite the state. i ate my 2000 calories, got plenty of protein and drank plenty. all day long i was kind of hungry, but i felt like it was more that i was missing carbs. my stomach feels all liquidy when i try to fill up on fruits and veggies, and it feels like it needs carbs to sop that up. of course, i know that's not what's happening, but that's how it feels. i gave in around 4 and had some toast. i'm not trying to go low carb, but i have been trying to eat more fruits and veggies. the toast didn't hold me until dinner and then dinner was salad with peaches and beef. i was still hungry after that and ate a diana banana. that usually fills me up. it did not. i finally decided to eat a bunch of carrots instead of some cookies. it seemed like the right choice. i ate the whole bag. my husband was amazed. and probably annoyed since i was crunching so much. that was a lot of carrots! but i'm still hungry. does this happen to anyone else? it just seems that fruit and veggies do no fill me up.

When I don't eat baby carrots, I feel hungry. Baby carrots are what has kept me going. Some people say carrots have too much sugar, but your body is processing all that fiber, so the sugar is not hitting you all at once, like a fruit or a dessert. There is a balancing act going on. Or something. :)

Are you getting enough fat? I know that for me having enough fat feeds me. Without fat and protein I was always hungry. Also, I found that when I didn't eat anything from a box the cravings stopped. But I do have a lof of fruit. I would try more fat, butter preferably, not margarine.

I make sure to get some baby carrots. My mouth likes to crunch. I think they are helpful as well. Definitely better than pita chips! LOL

I am sorry you are so hungry. It sounds to me that maybe you are following the wrong diet plan or not following it correctly. I have been on Atkins for over a year now and have lost 50 lbs. During all this time I have never once been hungry or felt deprived. Do some research are come up with a better plan so as not to be hungry. Good luck!

thanks all! it's funny that you guys eat baby carrots to fill you up and they were just making me hungry! the crunching WAS satisfying. i think i am getting enough fat. i do eat butter, not margarine. i'm not following a specific diet. i am just trying to eat more whole foods and less junk. i do feel better today. much less hungry. i had more starch today than yesterday. i'm looking for a place to research how much carbs, protein and fat to eat. i know it varies a lot with ideology. the kittie is chechu. he's a sweetie.

Gnewfry, IMO the calories thing and change of diet is a process. When I first started in September my RDI was 1800 calories. I wasn't hungry often but I ate every one of those calories every day - sometimes more. Over time, I've reduced my RDI. I've also learned more about what makes me feel full and keeps me that way. You start experimenting with foods and finding different things each day. My RDI is now down to 1450. Again, some days I'm over and some I'm under. My monthly average though has been below 1450/day for a few months. As far as the carbs/fat/protein ratios go, a very simple rule of thumb I've read here (and elsewhere) is 40/30/30 (40 carbs, 30 each fat and protein). There are many members here who are MUCH more scientific about the calculations. As you read the journals, you'll start to recognize them. I'm sure if you want to be more specific any one of them will be glad to help out. For me, for now, I'm just shooting for "better than before".

You might try eating a little protein with the carbs. Examples: Tablespoon of peanut butter with an apple, Tuna fish (can packed in water drained) in your salad, 3 oz chicken or turkey with a salad, nonfat yogurt with spices for a veggie dip. You might be surprised how a little protein will fill you up and nix the hunger cravings. Occasionally, I do air popped popcorn with cinnamon and ground hot pepper sprinkled on it. I air popped 2 tablespoons popcorn in a brown paper bag in the microwave. After popped sprinkle on your choice of spices (not butter, oils or salt lol). It will fill your tummy up with a small bit of calories.
