myawethinTICself's Journal, 17 Feb 14

I will be trying something different today & for the next 2 weeks that I must admit I am a bit excited about! :D

I mentioned a few weeks ago about reading a book titled "The 100" by Jorge Cruise. Well,I took 15 pages of notes then went back over them to get a fuller understanding of what he was saying, which was that we only need to count sugar calories in order to lose weight.
(For those who enjoy an argument please save it for YOUR posts or others of like mind & do *not* add it to *my* journal.Thank you)
In fact,Jorge makes the claim that by applying this method we will lose up to 18 lbs in 2 weeks. Then afterwards lose 1-4 lbs per week consistently.
He makes some statements that I agree with, such as that with knowledge & understanding come motivation to move forward. That making the connection between sugar, carbs, insulin & the accumulation of fat in the body we become empowered to make right choices. And that losing weight isn't about the *quantity* of food as much as it is about the *quality* of the food.
He also explains *why* weight fluctuates:"There is a 24 hr. cycle to fat:we begin accumulating fat at the beginning of the day & then ,ideally,we burn fat between meals & when sleeping at night. Thus we weigh less in the morning & gain weight into the day."Basically what determines the # on the scale & the *changing* of that # is the *type* of foods we eat & how our individual body reacts to that food.Unlike what some believe ,our body is *much more* than a gas tank that can simply be filled with the lowest grade of fuel we can decide & then run until empty. Our body is a complex system that is marvelously designed to communicate with the foods we eat & in order to determine how they should be stored or regulated. :D Maybe this will help those who have voiced frustration over their scales "fickleness" :D He goes on to say that our choices thru-out the day affects how this works: More carbs=more insulin= more fat stored on the body.Conclusion- Foods that drive hormones to store fat instead of burning it makes us fat!
Sugar calories consist of ALL carbohydrates:Grains,Starchy veggies, flours, potatoes, fruits, crackers, cakes, chips, pasta, cereal, rice, corn, etc. To calculate sugar carbs in food he says to take the total carb. grams & multiply it by 4.The aim is to have no more than 100,spread thru-out the day.
What I found exciting is he gave a chart where depending on how much you want to lose, what you can expect:
Lose 30-60 lbs...6-9 lbs/wk
Lose 10-29 lbs...4-6 lbs/wk
Lose 3-9 lbs...1-4 lbs/wk
Aim for 25-30 grams of fiber/day to accelerate weight loss with plenty of water to move waste.GOAL-to feel satisfied (full means overate)Eat ONLY when hungry.
***When near goal weight, weight loss will naturally slow down.

The 100 is designed to ensure body is keeping insulin low & producing leptin (appetite suppressing hormone)regardless of gender, age, size while ensuring enough complex carbs daily. If larger body types feel they need more to eat he has provided lists of foods from proteins, fats & low sugar veggies he calls "freebies" that can be eaten .
For those who want a more structured approach he also includes a meal planner.

There is so much information in this book that I think is important to know & that I'm thrilled at the opportunity I took to read it. I am anxious to see how it goes.

Hey, TIC, that is really neat. Great tip, taking a look at this Jorge Cruise book. :D This seems to fit exactly into the same concept as the Gary Taubes stuff I've been looking at. Let me know how it goes for you!

NM ...oh ok,got it.Thought I missed something :D & yep,I agree that not all carbs are equal in quality but all are equal in the sense they breakdown into sugar.

What you are about to embark on is so interesting! I just started into Gary Taubes because of the incredible success of a friend. I am so interested in hearing about your experience on this as well. It is through experimenting with various "ways" that we will find what truly works for each of us as individuals. I hope you don't mind but I will be watching and reading of your experience with great interest. I did a Steak and Eggs experiment recently ... so successful in terms of weight loss, even afterwards when I went back to adding some veggies. Good luck!

I still don't quite get it. Is "The 100" calories from carbs (25 grams), or 400 calories (100 grams)?

Anxious to see how it works for you! Good luck!

That is interesting. It used to be so hard for me to think there was anything 'wrong' with fruit ... until I finally understood the sugar consequences... and that tomatoes and bell peppers are fruit and high in sugar... which is probably why I crave them. I'm hooked - keep us informed.

I also find this interesting but quite honestly I'm still of opinion that diets don't work. Metabolism, hormones, adrenaline, and so many other things are hard-wired into our being through genetics and DNA. Jealousy from this corner towards all people who not only can stick to a diet- but actually see results from it!

cat... don't blame it all on metabolism, hormones or adrenaline unless you've been through it. If you think that's the case, you need to see a doctor and get tested. Diets work if you eat the right stuff and not processed or junk. I have hormone problems along with many others on this site. And we're doing it. No excuses.

NM...I missed a comment of yours! You went from saying "it seems like a logical way to start" to "it seems a bit extreme",again I feel somethings missing in translation :D The 100 is referring to 100 calories from sugars. By taking the total carb count, multiplying it by 4,because each carb has 4 calories, you get the total # of sugar calories for that particular food. The goal is to do have no more than 100 in a day. Today was my first day,I ate only when I was hungry,my food intake is recorded in my food diary here on fs. I have only ate *5* sugar calories for the day & I don't feel hungry, lethargic,or deprived. It is now,10 p.m.

BELLA...I will...& for some reason, that either wasn't mentioned in the book or I overlooked the mention of it, Jorge lists tomatoes & red bell peppers as "freebies", foods that have no sugar calories.....

classicrocker... i have actually been to multiple doctors. i asked my pediatrician 2 years ago when i was 17, my doctor now that i'm no longer in the pediatrics division, as well as my ob-gyn who was actually the one to help deliver me those 19 years ago. they all told me that although most of my hormone levels are normal (a bit too much testosterone) and my adrenaline levels are pretty average, the genetics that i inherited from my fathers side have a very large part in my weight issue. They told me that thyroid problems are completely hereditary and what does the thyroid affect? yes, that's right, hormones and adrenaline. i think classicrocker you might be one of those people who have found success in eating a specific kind of food- but I' m not one of those. and yes i have been on diets. my mother has supported me through atkins, south beach, weightwatchers, and the cookie diet. nope none of them helped. what did get me losing weight was simply by exercising and distracting myself from food period. not everyone benefits from eating a certain kind more than others. sometimes it really is just about cutting calories and not worrying which ones. at least that's what worked for me.

CAT...Diet is defined as "foods & drinks regularly consumed." And everyone *has* one. Some diets(foods & drinks regularly consumed) are more healthy consisting of fruits, veggies,& lean meats while others are not healthy & include soda, candy, & the like. Some are restricted because of health concerns such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, the list goes on.....even newborns have a diet that they adhere to,starting out with milk, moving on to other liquids & eventually solid foods. When you look at your food diary you are seeing the *diet* that you adhere to :D However,I think in your use of the word you were meaning what *some people* refer to when talking about eating a certain way in order to obtain specific results & once the specific results are reached they change the way they eat....in my opinion (& I've said before,my opinion only really matters to me)there is no reason for jealousy toward those who do as just described. Their bodies are being ruined inside & out by such a course. What is needed is our *diet*(the foods & drinks we consume regularly) to be our lifetime plan. A life-style! :D

By the way ..."the 100 is designed in such a way that regardless of age, gender, size ...anyone can benefit from it"---Jorge Criuse

I still don't understand. Something's being lost in translation alright, but I don't think it's my translation. I'm not trying to be argumentative. In your first post you said carbohydrates are all counted as sugar. In your post to me, 7 posts above, you state you have only eaten *5* sugar. Your food record says you ate 34.41 gr of carbohydrate. Again. What is sugar. By what you have said previously each gr of carb is x4 for sugar, you are just under 140 'sugar'. Please clarify.

i think she means sugary items?? and yes but i'm pretty sure rocker was criticizing my choices in diet rather criticizing the misnomer of the word i used. and no restricting one's diet by being on a "diet" does not help everyone. maybe a large percentage- but not everyone. exercise is the way to go because you still have a well rounded diet without "dieting" and as long as you are healthy and in shape (which is measured by heart rate and stamina), that's what counts. and being on a "diet" does not make you in shape.

NM...You are right! I was looking at the carb's on the nutrition label of each thing I fixed today & if it didn't have one such as the veggies I used the books calculations. In my comment to FULLABELLA you may have noticed he counts tomatoes & red bell peppers as "freebies"(no sugar) ....this is another area where I will look into more. Thanks for bringing this oversight on my part to my attention...& I in no way thought you were argumentative. :D
