mosiarmstrong's Journal, 21 Oct 20

So ... I think I finally found that ideal combination of meals that helps me hit my daily macros (40%P, 30%C, 30%F) but all the extra protein is making me heavier. I know it's because I've gained muscle over the last 21 days since my last weigh-in.

(Yes, I cheated and weighed myself before the 30 days was up, fight me :-D)

My workouts have been mostly weight-training-based with bodyweight and relatively light(er) dumbbells ranging from 3lbs to 20lbs. I want to continue slimming down while holding on to my lean muscle.

Should I be switching my workout over to something more cardio-based, like Insanity? Right now I'm doing a mixture of the 21-Day Metashred (M, W, F) and Riptensity (T, Th) with some spinning and jumprope on Saturday. Do we have any exercise expert who would like to weigh in and answer this question for me?

Hey Jenny :D Thanks! I'm always online, I just don't post much unless I'm updating my profile or weighing in but I always log my food for the most part. Thanks for checking in! Everything is going well. Just working from home and staying safe, getting stronger and enjoying life. How about you?

Keeping up with the protein seems to work.

is it the workout or do you need to cut a few calories or carbs for a while?

If there's every anything exciting about gaining, it's knowing that it's muscle! 💪🏼👍🏼 way to go!

*ever. Typos really burn my ass. Especially when I think I re-read before posting.

@carol655, I know that the thermic effect of protein will help with raising my metabolism and cutting so I think I can keep up with that. I think I might just not be doing enough cardio.

@Joelmel, I barely eat many carbs as it is. In a given day, I have 1/2 cup old fashioned oats, 2 slices of Sola Bread (2 g net carbs each) and for dinner, mashed sweet potatoes. The balance of my carbs come from my morning juice (spinach, 1/4 of an apple, 1 oz strawberries and the occasional clementine) and the occasional coconut bun that my wife makes. Outside of that, I keep my carbs below 40% of total intake for the day. Maybe the answer lies in cutting calories. I usually eat about 1650 per day (and I rarely exceed 2000) but I'm also 6'1" and 196 lbs. FS tells me I should be eating 240 calories. That seems like a lot.

that's a good thing. gaining muscles is good for long term health, they say.

@davidsprincess, I SHOULD be excited, right but all I can think of is (higher number on the scale=getting fat again) X-D The mindset that your success can only be gauged by the number on the scale is something I still struggle with but I'm getting better about it.

@MissMorena it is, and I'll want to hold on to as much muscle as I can when I'm older. I'm just thankful I can still gain muscle now and I'm not like one of those people who never gains any muscle no matter how much they eat and how heavy they lift.

ALL of the recommended daily allowance calculators put me at a calorie level that will have me gaining weight. We each have to figure out our own path and the number of calories that work for us. Congratulations to you on eating so many whole foods as the source of your carbs. I know staying away from processed carbs has been very helpful to me.
