Kenna Morton's Journal, 15 Mar 20

The governor of California has asked that all people over 65 voluntarily self quarantine. It seems that they now know that people can test positive for the virus for days before they become symptomatic and that may be a more significant factor in the spread of the disease than spread by symptomatic people. I heard this myself only late last night so am still unclear as to the details.

Hello Sara...I do not work in the lab. But, yes, on the research team which includes a host of folks as a medical writer (writing research protocols, study documents, tech reports, publications, policy briefs for legislators) and previously as a clinical trial specialist (regulatory and research site operations) for the military - the team includes lab techs, investigators, operations, regulatory, data management/statistics, project management, IT...You start with a research concept which is then written into a protocol. The protocol goes through a series of regulatory approvals from in coutnry and out of country (I do most work in Africa) Depending on what your objectives are depends on the study design. So it varies. For instance, it could be an observational study in which you take labs of infected folks to study progression and behaviors. It could be a therapeutic study in which case you to pre-clinical trials on animals, look at results, and then decide if it's effacious and safe to continue into a phase 1 study. Phase 1 studies are usually small and only include a handful of volunteers. There is a set of inclusion criteria a volunteer must meet in order to enroll in the study. Then they are administered treatment and labs are taken at subsequent visit. It could be a lab only study in which the virus is cultivated. I don't have the expertise to discuss cultivation methods. But there are courses you can take once in school if it's something you are interested in. I learned them in my courses but cannot remember since I don't work in the lab directly (PCR, SDS Page, etc). I receive data and work with the team on interpretation and messaging.
