Multiplicity1's Journal, 08 Sep 10

I'm kind of bummed today. My foot is hurting worse again today. I don't think walking on it for 20 minutes was such a great plan after all. And driving makes it hurt too. I am frustrated because I want to be better now and to even know for sure why I hurt and that it will actually improve at some point. Even though my doctor thought it was a stress fracture it didn't show up yet on the Xray. I just want to be able to go back to my exercise routine which I miss like crazy especially now that I am under so much stress. I want especially to be able to walk without pain. I don't know how long this is going to take to get better or if it is going to get better. It has improved from how it was originally. I don't know how long a stress fracture takes to heal (I forgot to ask my doctor but I have a return visit in a week). It has been at least two weeks since this first started hurting but I was exercising on it for a week of that time. I've only been off my feet for a week but it seems like forever.
I'll add some more to this journal entry later. I had to actually take a pain pill for my foot which I haven't taken in about five days now.

Sorry to hear about your foot. I had Plantar Fasciits (sp?) a few years a go-it was excrutiating! I can't imagine how a fracture in your foot feels, but I hope it gets better soon!

If it is a stress fracture, stay off it as much as possible and ice it. You might want to try using naproxen sodium every 12 hrs instead of pain pills - not as damaging and better for recovering addicts anyway. And better for your kidneys, too. But put that foot up and ice it when it hurts, okay? And the bad news is that if it IS a stress fracture, it COULD take 6 - 8 weeks to heal completely. Apparently they're hard to see on an x-ray until they start to heal. If you can, stick to the ab work, any floor exercises, bicycling and swimming. Have you had a bone density test? It's probably just due to exercising all of a sudden, but you might want to make sure you don't have the beginnings of osteoporosis. Ice is your friend! :) Oh, and msamy034 - I have plantar faciitis, too. Mine has never gone away...only gets better. I'm usually okay, but if I decide to go barefoot a few hours one day, I sure pay for it the next day!

Sorry that it is still bother you. And as redwinelover said you shouldn't be taking pain pills if you can avoid them even if that isn't your addiction. But you know what I caught right off the bat with this post "is just want to be able to go back to my exercise routine which I miss like crazy". Did you ever say that in your entire life before.

Redwinelover, I had some steriod shots in my feet that took the pain away...only had the shots twice (1 yr apart) and the pain has never returned over the last 6 years. I vary rarely go without shoes. Seems as long as I have some sort of cushioning I am good to go.

RWL, maybe that is what is wrong with my feet. I used to go barefoot all the time, I HATE shoes. But now when I do, it doesn't bother me at the time, but Lord Almighty, the next morning when i get up, I can barely walk. It is excrutiating!! Andrea, I had a stress fracture of the third metatarsal on my left foot. I did it stepping out of my van, which has 2 steps up, and which I decided to not use, and really should since I am so short! It took about 6 weeks for mine to get much better. RWL is right though, the ice packs and the ALeve is the way to go. You can use ibuprofen between the Aleve doses, also. You really shouldn't use any kind of narcotic pain meds since you are a recovering addict. Try putting some Aspercreme on it, too. That may help. I am a big proponent of Aspercreme!! I still have a lump on my metatarsal where I broke mine, and at times it gets a bit achey, but nothing that I can't handle. :D Feel better!

Hoping you feel better and heal quickly. Kudos on wanting to exercise when you are in so much pain. I have nothing wrong with me and I can't get up of my ass!

oohhh...ctlss... it DOES sound like plantar faciitis. That's when it kills you, when you get up in the morning. There's a stretch that helps, too, although the shots aren't out of the question. When they work, they work well. I'm a chicken, all it takes is one or two horror stories... But anyway, you stand on the edge of a step (holding on to banister)with your heel and most of the arch hanging off the step. Slowly lower your heel down, keeping your weight on the ball of the foot so you don't slip. Hold it for 20 or 30 seconds, and do each foot. you can do it a few times a day, but helps if it's first thing in the morning. AND always, always put something on your feet. I'm a huge wearer of those ugly, but oh-so-comfy Crocs. I have the flip flops for the every day, morning and around the house shoe... It does suck, but can be managed. You'll find as your weight drops, the pain might get better, too. But try the stretches. They really help. msamy034 - thanks! I'll keep that in mind in case it never goes away. Oh, Superfeet are really great. I've just bought the new Dr. Sholl's $50 custom fit inserts...so far so good. Pricey, but when your feet hurt... But I've loved Superfeet, too, and have used them for two or three years now.

I wear Sketchers Shape Ups and they really help. My crocs and flip flops don't help as much, but are better than barefeet. We have wood floors and walking on them barefoot doesn't help either You would think that I would learn, wouldn't ya??? I will try the stretches. Wearing shoes always is going to be hard, since I HATE shoes!! And the weight drop definately helps, as do the nightly foot rubs with Aspercreme that my DH gives me. Oh, yeah, it is nearly time for that now. lol...mmmm, I am so spoiled!!!
