Advice I gave to a friend on another board who asked for help because she was feeling so unsuccessful in her quest for weightloss. She has done well, but being farther along in her weightloss she has slowed down drastically and just wants it off NOW.

1. Stop being so flipping impatient! You did not put the weight on in a week or two, it will not melt away in a week or two. There will be times when you lose fast and times when you won't. It is where you are in 6 months from now that will matter.

2. Get rid of FAILED MISERABLY! (one category in her "grading system". It is in no way beneficial to reaching your goal or maintaining it for life.

3. Per Phyllis (and I totally agree): It is for a lifetime. If you expect to keep the weight down, you need to be doing what you can do happily for the rest of your life.

4. Eat in maintenance range for a week. Relax. Figure out the number of calories you need to eat to maintain your ideal weight, consider some moderate exercise that you can do for life. After a week, rethink your food plan and activity accordingly.

5. Don't knitpick every detail. Forget water weight, it is meaningless. As long as you let every little bump set you off you will be miserable for the rest of your life. You know that when you hit your "ideal" weight, it will still be up and down by 5 pounds easily.

6. Don't compare your loss to anyone else. How much someone else loses has no impact on you or your efforts. Be critical only of your food plan and your activity level. Where it is off, fix it, where it is good, keep it up.

7. Eat what you love in the right proportions Fit the foods you love into your eating plan and you will not feel deprived of anything and will less likely binge or have a pity party.

8. Don't weigh yourself everyday it is causing you too much anguish.

9. Celebrate the little victories Instead of worrying about far you have to go, focus on how far you have come. Instead of crying over a tiny gain, laugh at something you did.

10. Learn to love yourself. Everyday post 2 things that you love about yourself. Today I love hair color and my contagious smile.

I think most of it was stollen from FatSecret and I see k8 all over it!!

Great post! I was thinking about the lifetime aspect of my new eating habits. Can I sustain this forever? I think so. I don't feel deprived. One thing I'd like to see you write about is what it takes to flip that switch to actually START the change in eating habits (I say this instead of "diet" which sounds like a temporary fix). To me, the hardest thing was actually deciding it was time and then making it through that first couple of days -- and couple of weeks. And nice to see your pretty, smiling face in the pic, DD. :)

For me it wasn't flip the switch. It was one change at a time. The ONLY thing that I have cut out of my diet is sugar and foods that have a lot of added sugar like cookies, candy, cake, ice cream. OH, and the marchmallows. ; ) Even those things I allow myself to have but VERY sparingly, VERY occassionally. For the most part my changes have been to focus on adding foods or replacing foods. I have been replacing as much highly processed foods as I can with lesser processed foods. Like, whole wheat flour instead of white, brown rice instead of white, you know the routine. I have increased by huge amounts the vegetables that I eat. I have focussed on healthier cooking methods, not near as much frying, but some things just require it. ; ) Oh yes, and I drink a lot more water which has pushed other beverages aside and they have lost importance to me like diet soda. I have added a little milk. Instead of pouring it on cereal and calling it good, I pour out an 8 oz glass of milk, pour some on my cereal and drink the rest. I have also added a glass to some of my lunches that are just better (and healthier) with milk, like PB & J. I try to make a pot of soup every week so I can have good soup instead of canned. And on and on but, it is like climbing a mountain or running a marathon. One step at a time. ; )

Hi datadoll...Nice to see your face! And smile, of course! I totally agree with your post AND your comments above. It IS one change at a time, whether it's adding something healthy or replacing something with similar, but healthier version, or cutting out something with no redeeming value like sugars, simple carbs (basically staying away from white, processed foods!). Nicely put! Oh, I made the chicken again as you suggested and think it turned out better....still need a class on BASIC cooking skills, but husband LOVED it. :) I'll still try it with your recipe and still want to do the chicken legs one, too. Thanks again!

It does sound like familiar advice :). Not my advice though, just common sense right? Eating moderately and simply seems so counterintuitive compared to what we are used to hearing. But all the unnecessary complication throws a wrench is what could be a much less painful process. I have become a fearless chef :). Tonight I am making fried rice (much lighter oil than any Chinese restaurant! And more eggs for added protein, heavy on the vegetables of course!) and this one is a real stab in the dark: Asian Pistou Dumplings in Lime Broth for th soup. It's basically a wonton soup and the wontons are stuffed with a parsley, basil, garlic, edamame mix. Pictures later is it isn't a total disaster!

Yummy k8!! I love Chinese! Your soup sounds good and fried rice is my hubby's favorite. I really like the flavors of the sauces and oils. When I had kids at home I would make a Chinese meal with Egg Drop Soup, Green Pepper Beef, a chicken dish, Sweet and Sour Pork Won Tons and Ham Fried Rice. I used every dish in the house and while I was stir frying like crazy my daughter was washing the bowls. LOL Fun memories.
