I am very experienced at "dieting". I have "successfully lost" pounds and inches.... over and over again. One of the most important things that I have learned, no matter what diet plan you use, as long as you burn more calories than is required to maintain your weight, you will lose weight. Another, no matter what you do to take off the weight, if you do not continue to burn the excess calories you will gain weight. And finally, the human body is a very complex machine made up of many inter-related systems. To be healthy, all of those systems need nourishment, and each system has different requirements to fully function, thus the need for a variety of foods. This applies to the ability to lose weight, also. Your body is designed to try to maintain a healthy weight, thus the ability to store and burn fat. Unfortunately, that is dependent on what we put in our mouths, and how much we move our bodies.

I have learned to focus on nutrition. As I said, the ability to lose weight is dependent upon that. I have learned quite a bit about nutrition from the many diets I have tried. This time, I am using a piece of nutrition software to help me learn to fine tune the nutrition. Although the basics are protein, fat and carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients are what your body requires to fire on all eight cylinders.

While focussing on nutrition, I am learning what is required to maintain that elusive "ideal body weight". While I have seen it on the scale a few time throughout my life, I have never been able to maintain it. I have had the mindset of either "dieting" or "not dieting". The truth of the matter is that maintaining a healthy weight requires long-term "dieting". Continual awareness of what goes in your mouth with more focus on nutrition than pleasure and a continnually active lifestyle.

I agree with that 100%. ALL diets work for weight loss. The question is, how will we keep it off? Regardless of how you lose the weight, there needs to be a plan for maintenance. I tell myself frequently Old Habits = Old Body. It's just as simple as that. The diet mentality is strong. It's pushed upon us by a multi-billion dollar industry. Once we break free of the temporary thinking and realize we must change our habits for life, we can find real success.
