KenDawgg's Journal, 23 Jun 19

Ok so first I did the weight loss thing from January 7 to February 28 and dropped from 328 to 285 (43 lbs). Then I switched to a muscle building program which watched my body fat drop from 35.7% to 28.8% while maintaining weight around that 285 mark (+/-2-3lbs here and there). Now I think I'm ready to switch over again and start leaning out some more. I do not want to be a huge muscle head nor do I want to continue growing (my thighs are at 27" and my biceps are 18", Shoulders at 61" and chest at 53.5"). Not sure where to go from here though. I want to be lean and burn more fat but don't want to keep up the muscle building... or do I? Any tips or advice is appreciated! Looking to make a nutrition switch as of July 1-ish. Thanks for reading!

Ken, A lot is based on height. If you’re less than 6 foot, our bodies need to carry less than 200 lbs.

I haven't been less than 200 lbs since the sixth grade. About 15-20 years ago I lost 125 lbs right after I retired from playing football and got all the way down to 225. That was my lean weight at the time and so became my goal weight at the time. I looked hideous! My frame is too big to carry that small amount of weight. I am 5'10 and my Dr says I need to be 185. If I can't stand to look at myself in the mirror then I'm not going to be able to maintain that. I actively tried to put weight back on at that point and thought I looked best around 260. Kind of overshot it by a bit 😂 but now my goal is to get around 255 and see what happens. This is why I'm trying to build up a bit as I'm dropping if that makes sense.

Looking stronger!

I saw a picture of a woman in a bikini who was 6 foot tall and 200 pounds and she looked perfect! I would think that under 200 pounds for some men would be way too thin!

What do you consider a huge muscle head because that isn't possible without a lot of work. It doesn't happen by accident. 😁 Just keep slimming down while lifting and watching your calories. See where you end up once you're at a healthy weight.

Going by the fat free mass index, I am near the limit of a natural weightlifter size wise and am 187 pounds. I still need to lose more to be completely happy. I'm an inch shorter than you.

I think as you get to a healthier weight and your body composition changes as you lose fat and maintain or gain muscle, your chest, bicep, thighs that you are afraid of getting bigger would actually get smaller. I mean your biceps are that big because of your weight, not giant muscle biceps, right? Am I making sense? I know what I'm trying to say but unsure if I'm conveying it correctly.

I don't have tips...but... you're looking fantastic!

One easy way to see if you're getting healthy is how big around your waist is. It's a pretty good indicator of your overall fat mass. It should measure about half as tall as you are in inches. So 35 inches at 5'10" which is 70".

@Diablo & Davidsprincess. You are both correct. Although my thighs and arms aren't "lean" they are mostly muscle and have been growing as I've been losing. The issue is that I keep getting told that to burn fat I need to build muscle. I've increased my calories and been doing more resistance training. My goal, moreso than the weight loss is to lean out. I do not want to be thin. I want to be lean. Last time I got to 225 I looked like a bobble head or a caricature because my features didn't fit some body parts, of that makes sense. My neck was thin and my head was huge. If I can just lose this damn belly I'll be happy! 😁

And everyone else, thanks for the encouragement! 💪😎👍

Keep up with the iron and count your calories. Your metabolism will change with time because you’ll built muscle and it will burn your fat even if you rest/sleep. Don’t worry about volumes :) good job, continue 👏🏻

haha, I feel ya Ken. I skimmed down to 195 back in my early 20s and folks said I needed to eat! I'm in the 285-290 range too and lift more now than ever before while being smaller in the waist than I have been in several years. I figure I'll fall somewhere between 240 and 260 when I'm where I want to be. sounds like you're in about the same boat. I'm using goals like how much can I lift and how many pull ups can I do and how far/fast can I run rather than how many inches around I am or how much I weigh.

Ken you and I are in the same boat. I’m 6’ 2” and near 230, but in 36 inch pants. Last time I was in those I was 30+ pounds lighter. My spare tire is very resilient. Honestly I think the difference is my age. But Diablo is right and he knows his stuff. Just stick with it. That’s what I’m doing. This is not a race or destination. It’s a life. Hang in there brother- you’re looking great! 👊🏻💪🏻

That’s a great transformation! I’m shooting for my Senior high school weight of 235. The drop in BF% is impressive!

You could maybe take it 20 at a time -- lose that, return to your "recomp" routine for a bit if necessary, start the next 20, etc. To give your skin and mental picture of yourself some time to catch up. Direct shoulder & tricep work might help combat the feeling of getting smaller too.

Great work so far -- the only thing that strikes me as a *bad* option would be getting down to 250 and bulking. Better to be closer to ideal range / out of the obese range for a bulk IMO. ~~~~ I also dislike looking smaller as I lean out, but I think part of that is just not being used to it, and part is coming to terms with less of the weight being muscle than we thought. Anyway, you're doing well from the looks of it.

Amazing transformation! 💪

Johncip, exactly. We are most of the time fatter than we thought. I remember reading an article to that effect not too long ago. People think they don't have much to lose to be truly lean and sporting abs but it takes longer and you have to go much lighter than you want. I was looking lean at 198 a month ago. Now at 187 I still have a ways to go. Sucks lol
