Went to a low income neighborhood impacted by Hurricane Michael in Panama City yesterday. We fed about 200 people a hot meal with fresh fruit and cold drinks. They were all so thankful. It was heartbreaking to see all the devastation; trees twisted and broken, houses in pieces, a brick church with no roof missing two walls giving a view into the sanctuary. I cried several times. It was also heartwarming to see so many people helping and the responses from those affected that lived there. You hear about looting but everyone was so polite and wouldn’t take anything without asking first, even the children. We had apples and pears sitting in a bowl for them to take and you could see the children eyeing them but they would ask first. Then when they got one they would tear into it. We tried to give them as much as they could take but they often refused because they wanted to leave some for others. Also, there still isn’t any electricity so they can’t store anything. Needless to say, I didn’t eat yesterday.
