Diet Pop?

Seeking some opinions. I stopped drinking diet pop a couple of years ago and switched back to regular pop - based on stories on how diet pop was worse than regular. Since I started my new plan in August, I have slowly cut out pop and juice - lower daily sugar grams. Now I have always said what I am doing is a lifestyle thing - going in with the idea this is life moving forward - not a temporary plan. So my question is this - realistically there are certain meals your going to have pop with - question is when that happens- do you choose regular or diet?

I choose diet based on the advice of my family doctor, diabetes dietitian and Dr. Google. Of course all say I should be drinking water most of the time.

I gave up all sodas in 1999. I drink water, homemade iced tea or lemonade with stevia for sweetness. If you can use a can of cola to cut through rust, you don't want it in your system.

Zevia is a soda with natural flavors and sweetened with stevia, it's a decent choice.

I quit drinking diet sodas in 2009. Drank occasional sodas until about 2011. Switched to sodas sweetened with cane sugar in 2012. My favorite was Hansen's root beer with a hamburger, hot dog, or pizza. But eventually, I just stopped buying them. Now, if I drink more than a few sips of soda, I get a stomachache!

I don't drink a lot of colas or sodas, but once in a while when I do have one I would rather have the diet soda than regular sugared.

I drink sparkling water and whiskey instead of soda or diet soda.

For a long time I would drink pop only when I ate out. I now just drink water. Pop overall just doesn’t make me feel well. It gives me palpitations, heartburn and gas. It’s a chemical cocktail after all. There was a time when I drank a 6 pack of pop a day. I gained 60 lbs. went cold turkey and lost the 60 lbs with no other effort. Drink more water.....among the added benefits- better sleep!

When I want a carbonated beverage, I like to drink sparkling water. I often flavor it with lemon or lime juice. Sometimes I experiment with juices like cranberry. I haven't been able to find a substitute for cola but I don't miss that taste...

Had a Sprite for the first time since December on Sunday and felt like crap after drinking it for a couple of hours.

After I got breast cancer I stopped drinking all diet drinks and all sugar substitutes. I felt that I had enough poison running through my system with the chemo. Also I was getting aspartame induced headaches. I don't normally get any headaches so that wasn't a good thing! So if it must be pop I'd go with regular and drink less. However, I too was a major pop drinker and have made a change. I began with the sparkling water plan and will occasionally still drink it. My drink of choice now is my homemade kombucha which is bubbly. It is good for me, I like the one I make myself with rhubarb. I no longer crave bubbly water! I drink 1-2 kombucha a day.

I picked up a Soda Stream at Target to replace my diet soda habit. Are you drinking a caffeinated soda? You may need to get your caffeine somewhere else (coffee, or even tablets … watch the daily dose and gradually decrease that.) Now I strongly prefer the carbonated water and if I need a little flavor add a drop of Mio (but I am even getting away from that.) At restaurants we order sparkling water. The constant refills of soda were a problem in an of them selves. There sodas to watch out for have phosphoric acid which isn't good for your bones. The artificial sweeteners don't have calories but make you body respond as if you had sugar … and makes you hungry, or crave something a little salty … But... all things in moderation. Read "tiny habits" which talks about getting your body accustomed to changes. When you make big changes the body fights back. Change slow and steady and the changes will stick.

Get those bubbly drinks at Walmart. They are clear fruit flavored.....I had bubbly sparkling carbonated water once from arrowhead...I dont see it anymore...not the tonic or soda water, just water....I like the fizz. I dont even need my drinks cold..

when I am out for dinner I usually have unsweetened tea or iced coffee with skim milk or hot coffee with skim milk - actually if I am out or home. Occasionally if I am driving on a hot day I will get a diet drink to have a covered caffeine drink. I also drink fizzy water if I get a sandwich on the run or something.

Plus if I really need sweet, I will get unsweetened ice tea and add sugar. Much easier to measure and sugar has only 15 calories per teaspoon.

There are no meals I choose to have soda with. I drink sparkling water with natural flavors (think la Croix but the generic brand) when I need carbonation. Sparkling water hydrates better too!

Choose WATER. Club soda with a wedge of lemon. Unsweetened Iced Tea with a smidgen of Sweet & Low or Agave. Back away from the carbonated soft drinks and juice completely.

I have noticed that diet pop makes me want to eat the fridge! Is it the artificial sugar?
