Multiplicity1's Journal, 17 May 10

I watched part of a show last night about some people who were food addicts. One young man weighed over 900 lbs. and his poor legs swelled up terribly and caused him lots of pain and difficulty. I couldn't see how he could even walk. As I watched it I was aware that I could be that young man - I could be that large - I could have his medical problems. I am so lucky that I have a solution for my food addiction which in my case I consider to be Atkins and the 12 steps I learned in Overeaters Anonymous. God's help is definitely crucial to my recovery. I have to do the steps and abstain from compulsive overeating by eating in a healthy way through Atkins. I am enormously grateful that I have found the solution to my addiction and that I am choosing to use it. I have made some mistakes but I have picked myself up and moved on. I have always told people I think food addiction is much harder to deal with than other addictions because we have to eat at least 3 times a day. An alcoholic or a drug addict doesn't have to use their addictive substance every day like we do. But we can recover and I thank God every day that I am recovering. One of the things that is helping me the most is making a gratitude list daily. It has helped my depression a lot. I am grateful for my family, my nice apt, my car, my good health insurance, my friends including the ones on this site, my husband's job, my getting off my diabetic meds, my health and our weight loss. I am going to go now and post on some buddies journals. Have a wonderful evening.

I am grateful that I found this site and so many wonderful friends that are always ther, don't judge me or belittle me if I slip, and that understand that negative reinforcement never works. If it did I would have lost this weight a long time ago! SO thks to each and every one of you wonderful, supportive, kind people.

Great gratitude list, Andrea! We should ALL try to remember and list all the incredible blessings in our lives and voice daily how fortunate we are. And you're so right - food addiction is the worst because we need food to live. Dead-on there, woman! I read a wonderful book that enabled me to quit smoking - The Easy Way to Quit Smoking, by Allan Carr. I think he wrote a book on losing weight, as well. I wonder if I should read that, even though the principles are probably the same. Don't replace _________ (a cigarette, an emotion, etc.) with food. Food won't fill that "need" we think we have (or do have), so no use in trying to replace what we've given up with food. I wonder how it works with the losing weight book? Probably don't feed an emotion - food won't solve a problem, no use trying to use it in it's place. Mmm...if I decide to get it and it addresses actual food addiction, I'll let you know. Anyway, congratulations, you're doing a wonderful job!
