SALT-met with nutritionist today. Topic included salt. I have intentionally tried to limit my salt intake. Had no valid reason for it other than a lifetime of hearing salt was unhealthy. Apparently untrue. She said not all salt is created equally. Our bodies need salt, vitamins d and k2 and magnesium for good bones. Well alrighty then!!! I actually like salt. She said NOT MORTONS that salt comes from a country i shall not name for fear of causing unintentional distress and can be full of unhealthy particulates such as metal. I had no idea. She strongly recommended Celtic salt or REAL salt (brand). Will be ordering today. Yippee!! So many things i have left salt out of. Wait till i tell hubs who is very salt averse a he also has thought unhealthy without any concrete reasoning. Touched on the flax seed (2TB) she has had me on for past 4 weeks along with bubbies pickles (1x a day) to help with my bowel function (which has been difficult for past 2 years to put it gently). I am also on a digestive enzyme which apparently have been taking incorrectly. Must take 1-2 with every meal not just 1x a day when i take all my supplements on an empty stomach. So, i learned something new. And thats a wrap for Monday.

nooooo don't give up salt you need some for sure. you will feel awful if you go really low sodium. Celtic is great I still like pink sea salt the best.

We started to talk about Himalayan sea salt but she said that was tricky had to be careful with it but i have forgotten why. I dont know if i am really low sodium but if i feel even better than i already do well whoop! Whoop! That would be fantastic.

I think it’s bc it does have added iodine which is needed for our bodies. Maybe that’s why. Kinda like bottled water, most purified water bottles contain zero fluoride or not enough. So they say anyway 🤷

I always thought salt needs to be consumed in moderation, especially if you have high blood pressure. I don't add much salt to food, I can really taste it now. When I was younger i would put it on everything, even dill pickles!

REAL salt is mined in Redmond, Utah. Best you can get as far as nutritional value.

Interesting on the real salt. I’ll have to google.

Think about this with your critical thinking cap on—- the purpose of digestive enzymes is to help digest the food you eat, supplementing what your body may not be making. It stands to reason that you would take them with meals. If all else fails, be sure to read the label on the bottle, mine says to take WITH meals. If you have a GI doc ask him about the enzymes— how much, how often, how LONG. The more enzyme supplement you take your own body produces less in response. Also ask your doc about adding 17 gm of Miralax (generic is ok) to your daily regime for your constipation issues. Salt is still an issue especially if you have BP or heart issues. Definitely a moderation issue.

We seem to be on parallel paths but for different reasons. I’m struggling with the salt issue as well. I will check out the real salt as I’m currently using pink salt. ( Himalayan) I’m having stomach issues from the electrolytes. My tummy hates any bubbles… I hope you get some positive results from all these changes you are making in your WOE! Sometimes it feels like it never ends. You are so dedicated and I applaud that!💜💜

no one listens to me when I tell them salt isn't the enemy! it's so important. if you ever get high bp, cut carbs, not salt and see what happens. Redmons salt is what most get. 👌 sounds like you might have a decent nutritionist. they are RARE.

Ah man I feel you on the nutrition stuff. I'm just coming off a 5 day liquid diet 'reset' for my stuff going on. I love me some good pickles! We have a local brewery that does a pickle flight. Cukes, carrots (with ginger yum), dilly beans, cauliflower all served in separate mason jars - so fun! Salt, I go with sea salt or the Himalayan pink stuff.

What are bubbies pickles, I like all kind of pickles but I've never hear of these and interested to hear that they are digestive friendlies...

Real salt is the best salt and the only salt I use in food! I taste the difference for sure! I only use sea salt when salting water for pasta or potatoes. I am in the same constipation boat for years. 😔 good luck!

There is a difference between sodium in food, Morton’s iodized table salt and all the varieties people mention in this thread. Iodine is an essential nutrient and deficiency causes some health issues. So if you aren’t getting iodine in your diet which is fairly easy if you are eating seafood and dairy you should be adding iodized salt to your diet. The reverse is you don’t want high levels of iodine so if you are getting it in your diet you should choose iodine free salt. If adding salt to help with hydration and electrolytes iodine free is best. And obviously anyone with thyroid, blood pressure or heart issues should talk with their doctor first.

I don't believe salt is unhealthy either. It is an essential mineral for out bodies we cannot really survive without it. It is interesting that is had become such a villain for so many. Hope you enjoy your new directions!!!!

I have cut my salt intake down to the dash diet levels most of the time. I have discovered that it's a factor in my restless leg syndrome. The days I increase my salt intake are the days my legs hurt more. Salt affects my rls more than sugar and caffeine and that's been motivation enough for me to continue. I do know that salt has a bad rep, though, so understand I'm only saying this anecdotally. :)

The sodium component of salt can be an issue for many people, especially people with heart and blood pressure issues. The deal is that we eat way too much of it— mainly because we eat so much packaged food which is typically heavy in sodium. Even many frozen foods are heavy in sodium because it is also a preservative. As usual, portion control and moderation. That also leaves us with an imbalance in our sodium/potassium balance. I was a dialysis nurse at one time and we kept a salt shaker at each patient’s bedside so that if we had a drastic BP drop we could instantly pull it up. People who are really salt sensitive can raise thier BP 10-15 points with just a small lick of salt from the palm of their hand. So imagine someone with hypertension pigging out on chips, and other heavily salted foods

Fritzy i imagine if i had high blood pressure would be a different conversation i was having with her. I had high blood pressure when i was obese but normalized once i got to a healthy weight.

Wifey i thought so also. I always thought salt was kind of bad for you so i intentionally reduce it in recipes or leave it out and when i do use it always felt a bit guilty. Given that i dont eat a lot of processed foods, tho i do eat some, and i rarely eat out my ingestion was pretty low. And hubs would always make a comment when i did use it which made me also reduce.

Kenna you’re right. She gave it to me to take and if she told me to take it with meals i forgot. It was a 60 minute review of my quarterly labs with the emphasis on cholesterol reduction of course. But yep, it makes sense to take with meals.
