Yearofhealth2023's Journal, 01 Jun 24

Found this little guy yesterday on my walk. He appears injured on the right eye down to the nostril. His parents were circling above him trying to protect him. He’s a fledgling. Can’t fly yet so just out in the open where a coyote, cat, eagle or hawk would certainly have finished him off (he was in a driveway a few houses down from me). Took his to PAWS wildlife rescue this morning-100 mile round trip for me. They said he is very thin, low temp and are thinking it may be systemic. Not a good prognosis but i will keep him in my prayers. Poor baby. What a rough start to his young life. I think his parents are ones i feed daily on my morning walks so i sure hope they know somehow i am trying to help. Sounds like without intervention he would certainly have passed out there one way or the other. At least he has a chance this way.

Lucky guy to be found by you!

Shirfleur i feel so bad for him. He was so brave. I have two dogs who were with me when I found him. He is learning to fly and couldnt sustain more than a couple feet straight up then down. His good eye is still bluish gray so he is very very young and im pretty sure im going to be told he cannot be saved. But God does work in mysterious ways and the fact I left for a second walk in the evening hours (which i never do) i took as meaningful as i found him at that time. Sigh. My heart is so much more tender for the innocents.

Bless you for helping this poor bird. Hubby and I have done this ourselves a few times as there are no wildlife rehabilitators close to us and I'm a retired critical care nurse. We actually had a half-dead Nothern Yellow Shafted Flicker we nursed back to health that one day perked up and was flying loose in the house. LOL. This is proof that you are not only beautiful on the outside but beautiful on the inside too. Seriously, I want you to be blessed by your kindness. You are an awesome human being.

Morticia what i dont understand is why more people are not tenderhearted for those that need our help big or small. Thank you for what you said but i dont think it is such a great thing…if everyone helped where they could wouldn’t it be such a kinder, sweeter world. I tried to stop a woman walking who was from another country so at first i thought there was a language barrier but nope turns out she understood me just fine and she said she would send her husband up to help but of course tht never happened. This person lives maybe 12 houses from me tho i dont know her. A man and woman walked by and i asked them if they liked animals and he looked like a guy that lives a more alternative lifestyle. Black fingernails kind of interesting hair cut and this guy got down on his knees with me to look at the baby and agreed to watch him while i ran home and got a box for him and they walked home with me and the baby bird. So, woman my age did not want to get involved whatsoever, dude who looked like he might be a little hard hearted was sweet and kind as could be.

Super-and that is the problem with people.

Buenita-i do have a super big heart for animals. Much less so for humans. Not that i wont help a 2 legged but just prefer to help the 4 legged.

as a former wildlife rehabber, you absolutely did the right thing. I just rescued a pre-fledgling raven a couple of weeks ago who was in the road and not moving out of the way for cars or hiding properly. His parents were still there but little guy was in grave danger. I only have a 16 mile round trip to drop him off, thank you for driving so far for him.

Sherylquintanasmith-that was part of my worry for this little guy — his parents were sending out multiple cries warning of danger and he ran into the road as best he could. So if it wasn’t one thing would be another and neither positive outcomes. Not that he is going to have a positive outcome. They said they would email me an update in 6-8 weeks but it sounded pretty grim at intake. But vet wasn’t there yet so maybe. Feel bad for the parents too. Having their baby kidnapped. Such conflicting emotions.

is that a raven??

I hope the fledgling survives!! I wish we had ravens in SD. they are smart, beautiful creatures. I read your previous comment, I used to dress more alternative/goth. Theres the misconception that the goths are mean and wild, who would destroy your car and steals your purse and laugh while doing it(a bit of an exaggerated description) It was super preppy kids that I found to be more of a bully then my circle of goth friends. we are strong enough to wear our emotions on our sleeve, therefore we have nothing to hide. the kids that have hidden emotions because usually don't Express them correctly..

Dazey, he didnt really look goth just kind of tough but it surprised me he was so tender. Im also hoping the fledgeling survives. Ive been keeping him in my prayers.

Dazey, he is a crow. While ravens and crows look very similar ravens are much larger and their tail feathers are a little different. Both are incredibly intelligent tho. They operate at about a 7 year olds level. When i started feeding then i started reading about them. University of Washington did a large multi-year study a few years ago it was so interesting to read. They are affectionate, thoughtful, mate for life (unless widowed then will mate again), their offspring live with them up to 5 years unlike songbirds who kick them out of the nest pretty quickly, they have funerals for their departed family, they remember faces and hold grudges. I could go on but pretty interesting little creatures. If they didnt have such an annoying “caw” I think they would probably be more loved. One or two caw’s is notifying one another or saying hello. 3 or more is danger. Do i sound like the crazy bird lady in the park😂

No, you don't sound like a crazy bird lady! You sound like intelligent, knowledgeable woman!! I didn't realize how smart crows were too! It is surprising how some seem and how some are. It shows it can be hard to trust our perception of someone else, until interaction is made, like that first lady couldn't care less and nature!!

Dazey great analogy. Crows get a bad rap perhaps because their murder (flock of crow is called that unkind word) can be so large or because they are so smart they can ruin crops or the noise. I had to stop feeding them in my backyard (i had about 3 i was trying to befriend so they would get close to me) because they were sitting on my fence waiting for me to get peanuts and going to the bathroom on my fence. Cant have that. I think it’s the same 2 or 3 that will kind of hopscotch with me for about a mile of my walk landing about 15-20’ in front of me waiting for me to throw a peanut. They will kind of hop into the road as i, hubs and the boys get about 3’ from them and as soon as we have passed they grab the peanut. I usually whistle when they are on the light pole or the high trees and they usually come, knowing i have food. They make me smile.
