Considering sliding away from the LC diet and towards more of a 50/50 Complex Carb / Protein diet. I could be WACK but the long term LC intake seems to have taken a toll aand zapped immediate energy levels and joints just kinda stiff etc. Talk amongst yourselves and enlighten me.

Carbs are the best source of energy, for sure. I was going to wait and see what others said, but I couldn't help myself. I say, go for it.

I am a super fan of complex carbs. I eat fresh fruit for breakfast & lunch, assisted by their friend, Black Coffee, with veggies & protein for dinner. Tons of energy and I’ve lowered my total cholesterol to 168 in just weeks. A1C is 5.0. No meds. Bonus is that they have water, fiber, vitamins & minerals. I say go for it. 👍

Carbs=glycogen=immediate energy. While fats can be converted into glycogen, it’s just as inefficient as carbs being converted to fats. Your body only does it when it NEEDS to. Carb up, fats down and protein as required. Be active. It’s a winning recipe

Carbs also keep us awake late into the night, apparently. :D

West coast. It's just midnight here. Though am curious as to why Super is up, since I think he hails from the Carolinas. Hopefully not raiding the fridge and ruining the abs!!!!

Lol ate too much watermelon and had to wake up to pee... Sleepy time 💤

No such thing as too much watermelon— I can eat 5 pounds in a day. Bonus is that all the water flushes out excess sodium, keeping blood pressure low.

carbs = happiness 🙂 lol but really I am alot happier now that I increased my calories by 150kcal of all carbs and I have more energy. I'm around 250grams carbs a day now

I'm not sure what you mean by complex carbs. I think of bread and pasta. I know JustBananas is not a fan of processed foods. I don't think fruit or most vegetables have complex carbs. They have simple carbs (sugar). For non processed complex carbs I think you would be eating starchy foods like beans, sweet potatoes. Either way, I wish you luck!

@Fritzy: You have it backwards: Complex carbs are the healthy carbs, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains like oatmeal. Simple carbs are the unhealthy carbs -- sugars that you find in pastries, cookies, chips, bread -- that never fill you up and leave you craving more because they digest too fast.

Bananas - doesn't matter. I was just wondering what 66pack meant by his change of diet. Not sure if he was adding a cup of beans a day or slices of bread

JustBananas: I thought I just "craved more unhealthy-carbs" bc they taste good?! ;-) No wonder I get up every f'n hr after I get to bed. I thought it was just old-age. I stay away from most carbs:pastas/breads/French-fries/mashed-potatoes/gravy bc I'm not able to burn an awesome amt of calories like I used to when I was older. Now that I"m younger, I have to eat less of everything, not too much spicy/fried foods (and I luv spicy), and I mainly stay away from all noodles/pasta now too. If I don't have protein for breakfast/lunch/dinner, I'm left un-satisfied and it doesn't go away until I have some protein. Most of my life I"ve eaten more protein than anything whether it's eggs, fish, meat, protein powders. I'm lost at this point in life and I am really confused on what to do concerning what I eat. I want more veggies, but that protein does fill the vacuum left in my belly. I hate to be hungry or left un-satisfied.

Surprised many complex carbs also have good fiber and the calories don’t really seem to build that fast so still lots of room for protein. @ Diablo / Superman figured you two would be singing the same carb song! Lol.

I personally suffer from severe dehydration on a low carb Keto diet. I'm naturally more dehydrated in general and my doctors have ran extensive tests and cannot figure out why (not diabetes). I found that adding more carbs helped me some... but that's just my experience. I think low carb is great for some people. I still get about 50 percent of my calories from fat. That seems to be alright for me currently. I hope you find what works best for you!

@SlowMeta: All plants are carbs, whether they're grains, fruit or vegetables. Process the crap out of some grains and veggies and you get a Banquet Pot Pie. This is a "Simple Carbohydrate." But a leafy salad, nuts, beans, or a wedge of fresh pineapple is a "Complex Carb." Complex carbs are healthy. This is what 66Pack is musing over adding to his diet.

Fruits are simple carbs. They all go to the same place in the body anyway. The trick is to find the ones that fill you up and have some great nutrition which fruit does very well.

Yes I always considered fruits simple carbs too. Like a spoon of white sugar. Spike your blood sugar and away you go……

Simple carbohydrates are broken down quickly by the body to be used as energy. Simple carbohydrates are found naturally in foods such as fruits, milk, and milk products. They are also found in processed and refined sugars such as candy, table sugar, syrups, and soft drinks.

There is nothing to fear in whole fruit. Check out research discussed in Mastering Diabetes.

Sugar is sugar, but Fruit is not a simple carb. Read the entire article to understand the three types of carbs: starches, sugar, and fiber. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/15416-carbohydrates
