Sandy701's Journal, 11 Sep 12

Walked 3.2 miles today; 1.2 with both doggies, then an additional .8 with just 1 dog, and then the rest by myself.

I had the pool heater on, so I hopped in the pool when I finished up and swam a few laps. The weather's nice enough for swimming, but the last couple nights have been cool enough to drop the water temperature a bit, so having a heat pump to add some heat really helps.

Of course, today is the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. Like most everyone else, I think back to where I was and what I was doing as the events unfolded. At the time, I was on my way to a social event....one of those ladies' groups that starts up in the fall when everyone signs up for this or that. I heard about the first plane as I was driving to the event. As would happen throughout that morning, reports were sketchy and uncertain.

By the time I reached the event, the situation was still unclear but soon thereafter the second plane hit and it was clear it was all NOT an accident. In the fog of such a situation, so many reports began to come in....more planes, more attacks, Sears Tower in Chicago was a target, Capitol was a target, etc....all sorts of reports that would turn out to be false, but at the time....who knew??

A secretary in a nearby office to the ladies' event had a TV so she would keep running out letting us know what was happening. In a surreal way....the head of this ladies' group kept on with her agenda, seemingly oblivious to the magnitude of what was happening in our country. Talk of bridge groups, gardening, day trips, cooking and entertaining were a stark contrast to falling buildings, intense fires, smoke, and the dying. I realized that while one of the women fretted about whether cupcakes should be plated with or without their seasonal paper wrapping on, I just had to leave.

You see, my DH was on mobility status at that time. He had a huge combat duffel all packed in our guest bedroom, ready to pick up at a moment's notice. I realized that he could have received a call in the midst of this and, if I didn't see him on his way home to pick up that duffel, I might not see him again. Period. He might not even be able to make phone contact with me - or anyone - due to being on the move.

I drove home, as quickly as I could. And breathed a huge sigh of relief seeing that bag still in the house.

And, like the rest of America, I watched as all the events continued and the real story came out. I was glued to the TV, watching Ashley Banfield report, all covered with the dust and debris, as well as what we would come to know as the sacred remains of some of the victims of 9/11.

Fr. Mychal Judge would become victim #1 of the 9/11 tragedy. He was a chaplain for one of the ladder companies and so he went to the towers with them. He's known, among other things, for a prayer he penned and I happen to like it very much.

"Lord, take me where You want me to go,
Let me meet who You want me to meet,
Tell me what You want me to say, and
Let me keep out of Your way."
